Investing in Social Enterprise by John Fleetwood

Social Enterprise – One of the Positive Pennine Portfolio’s core holdings is the Rathbone Ethical Bond Fund.   This is a large fund of over £1 billion, so even 1% of the portfolio can make a lot of difference.  To their credit the managers of this fund have recognised an opportunity to invest a small proportion of the fund in charity bonds that have a high social impact, something that can make a big difference.

Investing in Social Enterprise

One of these investments is the Thera Trust.  This is a charity that leads the Thera Group of companies that support over 1,000 adults with a learning disability to have control over their own life.  This empowers people with a learning disability to be leaders in society. As well as supporting people in their own home and in the community, the Thera Group offers a range of specialist support.

This includes helping people to manage their own finances, finding the right place to live, and conducting quality checks.  To demonstrate their commitment to fulfilling this vision, 40% of Thera’s paid directors have life experience of learning disability. As part of their role, they ensure that Thera remains focused on providing high quality support which meets people’s needs.
